How Many Bras Do I Really Need?

If there was only one word to describe your lingerie drawer, would it be “confusing?” Listen up, ladies… You’re not alone! For many women, knowing what styles and how many bras to own can be mystifying. Some women we talked to said they have about five or six in their drawer, while others had up to thirty!

Perhaps it’s the sheer indecisiveness of picking out a bra in the morning, an untimely wardrobe malfunction, or just the same, old, tired bra that has you thinking “how many bras should I own?” Let us help demystify this common question….

ThirdLove bras displayed on rose gold hangers include the Classic Uplift Plunge Bra in pink, Lace Balconette Bra in white, Everyday Lace T-shirt bra in nude, and Lace Contour Plunge Bra in white.

What to have in your everyday bra collection

It’s important to have a healthy rotation of the best everyday bras for you. Your go-to style of choice depends on your personal preference, lifestyle, and breast shape. For some, this may be as simple as a lounge bra, or a wireless, and for others, this might be something more structured. Everyday bras are the ones that fit amazingly and are comfortable enough for everyday, all day wear. Some of our favorites include the 24/7™ Classic T-Shirt Bra, the 24/7 Pima Cotton T-Shirt Bra, and the 24/7™ Classic Uplift Plunge Bra.

Since your everyday bras are the ones you’re most likely to wear, well… every day… you’ll want to have a few on rotation. A good rule of thumb is three everyday bras:

  • Two in a neutral color or skin tone shade
  • At least one darker color, like Black, Espresso, or Olive, for outfit variety

Keep in mind that depending on how often you wear your bra, you may consider giving it a wash every 1-2 weeks (or more, as needed), so having a few alternates is always a good idea. You may even consider adding a wireless option into your rotation for those days where comfort is key.

Mix Up Your Bra Drawer With Flirty or Bold Styles

We all need to cover the basics, but what about a bra for those days (or nights) that require a little something “extra?” Consider adding in one or two statement bras to your collection. Whether it’s a hint of lace, a sexy racerback, or an alluring balconette, or even one of your everyday bra options in a bold new hue, a statement-making piece is every girl’s best friend.

Bras for Tricky Tops and Dresses

It’s also important to have a few bras for special occasions and tricker tops and dresses—like strapless, one-shoulder, or spaghetti strap styles. Multiway or convertible bras are a great choice, as these can be worn several different ways. It’s a good idea to have at least 2 of these bras in rotation as well.

Our 24/7™ Classic Strapless Bra is a great convertible option since it comes with two sets of add-on straps, one tonal and one clear, to do double duty. Straps can also be worn five ways—strapless, halter, one-shoulder, straight, or crossed in the back—to provide maximum style versatility.

How to Care for Your Bras

Once you have your bra staples handled, it’s important to take care of them to help extend their longevity. This means storing and packing them properly, and hand-washing them when you can (we know it may not sound like the most convenient effort, but it’s worth the effort—we promise!).

Many women are surprised to learn that even their most-loved bras have about a one-year lifespan. In addition to more obvious signs of wear and tear like loose threads, you’ll also know it’s time to replace your bra when you notice a change in comfort and feel. For example, if your straps are stretched to the point of no return or your band still feels too loose on the tightest hook, it’s probably time to say goodbye. Most importantly, if your bra is no longer doing its job is keeping you comfortable and supported, there’s no point in holding onto it.
